Let me introduce myself. My name is Luis Nell and first of all…

Welcome to my place

First things first, as you visited the About page I am kind of sure you are more interested about me in person. So let us start with my little story

Who is this origiNell. guy?

As I already told you, my name is Luis Nell.
I was born in Austria and living here right now (gosh, what a cold autumn we have this year..).

My interest in the internet began at a very early age, at about 4 or 5. I was kind of hooked with emails and the thought that they happen faster than snailmail. Later my dad registered me one at yahoo (remember that we are talking about the middle of the 90s here) and we, I could neither write nor read back then - so my dad assisted me, emailed with my brother. All this took place on an Apple Macintosh IIci. I also enjoyed playing Lemmings, "Oh No! More Lemmings" and the good old Prince of Persia. We even had Photoshop 3.0 and KidsPaint.

Funny fact: At the age of 5 I was on vacation with my grandparents. One day I looked up to the sky and my grandmother asked me what I wanted to be when I was older. Most kids at that age would have listed astronaut or firefighter… I told her I wanted to be a computer genius.

When I turned 8 we got a new Computer with Windows 98 on it. I got some space on Geocities and played around with Frontpage. Later I settled onto HomeSite (which my brother used) and then onto Dreamweaver and Flash, back in the days when Macromedia was it's own company. I can still remember what my first pages looked like (titled DJ WebBy and VIL - The very important Luis), unfortunately I do not have them anymore (just could not be bothered with backups at the age of 10/12).

With 13 I turned into a complete gamer, which made me practically abandon my love for the web. However, I was never really off the hook, so I kind of knew about those new exciting technologies, for example JavaScript turned from black magic into something widely adopted across the board and many PHP based CMSs made their debut. However, there was only one thing mattering to me back then: improve aim in my favorite ego-shooter (Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory).

At the age of 15, a now good friend of mine, showed me Python. Until then, I never really fell in love with programming, since I found source to look ugly and I just could not create something visually appealing as fast as putting together some HTML and CSS. That changed in the year of 2005. I really fell in love with Python and since then, it is my favorite weapon of choice for nearly everything.

I will do a fastforward now. In 2009 I finished school with specializations in Arts, IT, English and Ethics. After enjoying a wonderful summer I did serve my fatherland for 6 months (military service, something you have to do as a male austrian).

Right now my life mainly consists of 3 things (in no particular order):

By the way, for all non technical people, just consider me as a person who always has an open ear for his friends.. May it be technical or personal. So when I'm not sitting in front of the screen, you can usually find me out with friends having a drink or two ;-)

Concluding I want to say that I do not think I am a genius, as I wanted to be when I was 5. I just love to do things on computers. May it be designing, cutting videos, programming, chatting or simply helping my friends. This also brings me to the name of my blog: origiNell

About this blog

origiNell is german for originally, enterprising, novel, inventive etc. Furthermore it, obviously, contains my last name ;-) (as do the following german words: professionell and sensationell). However, this name implies a contradiction. A famous man once said:
Don’t try to be original just try to be good.- Paul Rand
I am trying not to be original, or originell in german - I want to be good at the things I love doing. Which leads us to the main themes covered in this blog:

My Programming Experiences

I am calling myself a web guy. Through this term I want to express that I am not just interested in designing and programming, but in everything related to the web. So my computer interests lie in unix-like systems, networks, web design, web development, user interface design and other topics.

Right now I have practices in:

  • HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
  • Python (my web development happens, not only but most of the time, through the awesome Django framework)
  • Some MySQL and PostgreSQL
  • Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign
  • Playing the guitar a bit (I know this has nothing to do with the computer, but it is something I like)

I hope you enjoyed reading my story as much as I did writing it. I know it is still a bit rough and not very visually appealing, but I am working on that :)!
